Private tour with driver
The volcanic land west of Naples, where the Romans came on holiday: the Flavian Amphitheatre in Pozzuoli, the baths and castle of Baia, the Piscina Mirabilis and Cumae with the Cave of the Sibyl. Four sites that do not fit into one day by public transport.
from€380per vehicle
“Phlegraean Fields: Pozzuoli, Baia and Cumae” is a private tour with driver and takes about 7 h. It costs from €380 per vehicle, not per person, in a sedan for up to 3 people, with driver, fuel, tolls and parking included; the exact price depends on start, finish and date. Stops and visiting time: Flavian Amphitheatre, Pozzuoli (1 h); Baths and Castle of Baia (1 h 15); Piscina Mirabilis, Bacoli (30 min) and Cumae archaeological park (1 h 30). Entrance tickets are not included: about €15 per person in total. You walk about 4 km over the day (moderate physical effort). When to go? Spring and autumn, when the heat does not crush the open-air sites. It is also the right destination when the Amalfi Coast is too crowded: the Phlegraean Fields stay quiet even in August. Best avoid the first Sunday of the month, when entry is free and slots sell out.
We leave Naples in the morning: the Phlegraean Fields begin where the city ends, past Bagnoli.
Pozzuoli and the Flavian Amphitheatre
The third-largest amphitheatre in Italy, after the Colosseum and the one in Capua. Today the arena is open, for a half-hour visit; the underground passages are closed. The rest of the hour in Pozzuoli is for the Macellum, the Roman market everyone calls the Temple of Serapis: its columns, marked by the sea halfway up, are the clearest way to understand that the ground here rises and falls.
Baia: the baths and the castle
Baia was the Romans’ holiday resort. The baths park descends in terraces towards the sea, among domes and nymphaea; above it, the Aragonese Castle houses the Archaeological Museum of the Phlegraean Fields, with the statues recovered from the sunken city off the coast.
Bacoli: the Piscina Mirabilis
A Roman cistern dug into the tuff, with five naves and forty-eight pillars, that supplied water to the fleet at Misenum. A half-hour visit, with a custodian who opens on booking.
Cumae
The first Greek colony on the Italian mainland. You enter through the Cave of the Sibyl, a trapezoidal corridor cut into the rock, and climb to the acropolis, with the sea in view as far as Ischia. Then back.
The price is per vehicle, not per person, and depends on where you start, where you finish and the date: work it out in the booking box.
Included in the price: driver, fuel, tolls and parking.
Entrance tickets not included: Flavian Amphitheatre, Pozzuoli €10, Piscina Mirabilis, Bacoli €5. About €15 per person in total. Meals, tastings and optional entrances are paid separately.

4 km · Moderate physical effort — About 4 km over the day, all away from the car: at Baia the baths park is terraced with steps, and at Cumae the climb to the acropolis is a sloping dirt path. Closed shoes, and water in summer: there is little shade.
Spring and autumn, when the heat does not crush the open-air sites. It is also the right destination when the Amalfi Coast is too crowded: the Phlegraean Fields stay quiet even in August. Best avoid the first Sunday of the month, when entry is free and slots sell out.
The Cumana railway (EAV) leaves from Montesanto and reaches Pozzuoli in about twenty minutes for a few euros. Baia, Bacoli and Cumae are served by local buses that run rarely: to Cumae, one every few hours. In recent months, after the seismic swarms, parts of the line have been suspended with replacement buses.
When it genuinely wins
For the Pozzuoli Amphitheatre alone the Cumana works perfectly and costs a fraction. The four sites on the same day, with their timed entries, do not fit together by public transport: between one bus and the next you lose half a day, and Cumae is the one that gets dropped. Here the tour is not a convenience but the only way to see it all.
