Full description

Pickup is in the morning at the meeting point entered during booking. Pompeii is half an hour of motorway from the edge of Naples, and we set the departure time around the entry slot on your ticket: you reach the gate when your slot opens, not an hour early in the sun.

One entrance in, another one out

The site has three entrances, well apart: Porta Marina, the classic one that leads straight to the Forum; Piazza Esedra, next to the Antiquarium; Piazza Anfiteatro, at the far end of the ancient city. You enter through the one shown on your ticket, but you can leave through whichever you like: your driver drops you at your gate and picks you up at the one you exit from. Enter at Porta Marina and leave by the Amphitheatre, and you cross Pompeii in one direction, without walking all the way back to where you started.

Four ways to see the site

  • On your own, with the park map and at your own pace: the choice for anyone who has been to Pompeii before or already knows what they want to see.
  • With an audio guide, one device each with the route narrated: the freedom of an independent visit, with someone telling you what you are looking at.
  • In a small group, with an English-speaking guide alongside other travellers. It runs in the morning only, and it is the simplest way to have a real guide.
  • With a private guide, just for you, who stays with you for the whole visit and shapes the route around who is in front of them, children included. In English, Italian, French or Spanish; for other languages we look for one on request.

You choose the option among the extra services when you send your request, and we confirm it with everything else when we contact you.

What you see in three hours

The Pompei Express ticket covers the ancient city, and three hours are enough for its heart: the Forum with Vesuvius behind it, the Stabian Baths, the Lupanar, the House of the Faun, the two theatres and the Amphitheatre, the oldest surviving stone Roman amphitheatre. The Villa of the Mysteries, with its fresco cycle, lies outside the walls and is only included in the Pompei+ ticket: if you want it, tell us beforehand, because it changes both the ticket and the exit where your driver waits.

The return is expected around lunchtime.

The same itinerary by public transport

The Circumvesuviana (EAV) links Naples to the Pompei Scavi – Villa dei Misteri stop, a few steps from Porta Marina: €3.20 a ride and 45 to 65 minutes door to door from the centre, with one change. Choose that stop, not the Trenitalia station of the same name, which serves the modern town at the far end of the site. In high season the Campania Express runs the same route with fewer stops and air conditioning, at a higher fare.

When it genuinely wins

For Pompeii alone the train is the right choice, and we say so: three euros, no parking, a station outside one of the entrances. The tour makes sense in specific cases — you are starting from the Amalfi Coast, where the line does not reach; you are travelling with small children or someone who walks little, so leaving by another gate without walking back matters; or in high season you have an entry slot or a guide at a fixed time and do not want to depend on train delays. And if you are already heading from Naples to the coast with your luggage, you do not need a tour: you can add a two-hour stop at the ruins to your transfer, when the timing allows.

Is it better to take a guide, an audio guide or visit on my own?

It depends on how much you want to understand of what you see. On your own you set the pace, but without explanation many of the houses look alike. The audio guide costs €10 per person and narrates the main route. The small-group tour, in English and in the morning only, costs €30 per person. The private guide costs €150 for up to three people plus €10 for each additional person, speaks English, Italian, French or Spanish and shapes the visit around who is in front of them: with children, it is the one that makes the difference.

Which entrance do we use, and where does the driver pick us up?
