Full description

We set off in the morning: from Naples to Caserta it is about half an hour of motorway.

The royal apartments

The palace is the largest royal residence in the world by volume, commissioned by Charles of Bourbon and designed by Luigi Vanvitelli. You climb the grand staircase and walk through the apartments, from the eighteenth-century rooms to those of the nineteenth, to the palatine chapel and the court theatre.

The park and the Great Waterfall

Behind the palace the park runs in a straight line for three kilometres, past pools and fountains, to the Great Waterfall; next to it lies the English Garden. You go up the avenue on foot, by bike or on the internal shuttle, paid separately. In two and a half hours you see the apartments and the whole park, without rushing.

Then back, in time for lunch.

The same itinerary by public transport

The regional train from Napoli Centrale reaches Caserta in 35-50 minutes for about €4 per person, and the palace is literally opposite the station.

When it genuinely wins

From Naples, for the palace alone, the train is unbeatable and we say so gladly: €4 and the station opposite the palace. The tour is for those starting far from the railway — the Amalfi Coast, the Sorrento peninsula — those travelling with small children or someone who walks little, and those staying in Caserta who want to be dropped off and picked up.
