Positano has no station and cannot be driven through: the town drops to the sea in staircases, and the SS163 cuts across the top with only two access points, Chiesa Nuova and Sponda. From there you walk down — which of the two is right depends on your address, and getting it wrong means two hundred extra steps with your suitcases.
The change is at Sorrento, and in summer the SITA bus to Positano leaves full: it is common to let one or two go before you get on, and large suitcases do not always fit in the hold.
A fine option in calm weather, but sailings are few and the first leaves mid-morning: an afternoon flight will not make it. Rough seas cancel it, and you end up looking for the bus.
