Full description

The coast by day belongs to everyone; in the evening it is another place. You leave when everyone else is heading back, and sunset sets the time: mid-afternoon in summer, late morning in winter.

Positano

You walk down between the coloured houses to the Spiaggia Grande and the majolica dome of Santa Maria Assunta, as the excursion boats come back into port. The car waits for you below, so the climb back is not your job.

Amalfi

The cathedral steps in the low light, the square lighting up and the harbour: an hour and a half for an early dinner or an aperitif by the sea.

Back along the coast

The road heads back towards Positano as the sun sinks towards Capri and Punta Campanella. If the light is right, the driver pulls into a lay-by above Praiano or Positano so you can watch it. Under an overcast sky there is no sunset, and we do not promise one: in that case we suggest another date.

When to go

From May to September, when the sun sets late and evenings on the coast are mild. Departure is in the afternoon and you are back in the evening. In winter the sun goes down before five: leave in late morning, and sunset already comes in Positano.

The same itinerary by public transport

Positano and Amalfi are linked by the SITA Sud buses, about forty minutes, and from April to October by scheduled ferries. To get there from Naples you need the Circumvesuviana to Sorrento and the bus, or the train to Salerno and the ferry.

When it genuinely wins

By day public transport works; in the evening it does not. The last ferries leave before sunset and the last buses, in summer, are the fullest: staying on the coast until dark and getting back to Naples or Sorrento in the evening by public transport is the part that cannot be done. It is exactly what this tour does.
