Half a day, for those staying outside Naples

Full description

We pick you up at your hotel outside the city — in Pompeii, on the Sorrento peninsula, on the coast or in Caserta — and enter Naples along the seafront.

The sea: the seafront and Posillipo

The first part of the drive follows the coast: Via Partenope with Castel dell’Ovo, Mergellina and then the Posillipo road, climbing between villas to the viewpoint over the bay. From up there you see Vesuvius, the Sorrento peninsula and Capri at once. It is the photo stop, about twenty minutes.

The hill: Capodimonte

We cross the city to the Capodimonte hill, where the Royal Park — free entry — looks down over Naples, from the port to Vesuvius. The Capodimonte Museum is not part of the tour: it would not fit into four hours, but the tour can be extended if you want it.

On foot: the old town

The last stop is on foot, because cars cannot enter the old town: your driver drops you at the edge of the restricted traffic zone and waits for you. In three quarters of an hour you walk Spaccanapoli, pass through San Gregorio Armeno, the street of nativity workshops, and reach the Cathedral. Then back to where you started.

How much walking

2 km · Low physical effort — Almost all the walking is in the old town: a couple of flat kilometres on cobbles, with scooters coming through the lanes. At the viewpoints you only step a few metres from the car.

When to go

All year round. Early in the morning the city moves faster and the light over the bay is clearer; Saturday afternoon is the busiest time on the roads.

The same itinerary by public transport

The open-top sightseeing bus runs two routes around the centre and Posillipo, hop on and off, for about €27 per person for 24 hours. With city transport you combine metro, funiculars and buses for Posillipo and Capodimonte, on tickets of a few euros, but there are many changes and the hill routes run infrequently.

When it genuinely wins

For one or two people with time to spare the sightseeing bus costs less, and we say so: you get on and off as you please. The tour is for those staying outside the city with half a day: no trains into Naples, and it goes up to Capodimonte, where the bus does not. From three people up, the difference per head shrinks a lot.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which entrance tickets are needed and what do they cost?

None: every stop on this itinerary is free to enter. The Royal Park is free to enter; the Capodimonte Museum has its own ticket and is not part of the tour.

How much walking does this tour involve?

Around 2 km over the day. Almost all the walking is in the old town: a couple of flat kilometres on cobbles, with scooters coming through the lanes. At the viewpoints you only step a few metres from the car. Low physical effort.

How long is spent at each stop?

Posillipo viewpoint 20 min, Capodimonte 25 min and Old town on foot 45 min. The rest of the day is driving, and the timings flex with traffic and with what you prefer: the driver works to the group, not to a fixed schedule.

When is the best time for this tour?

All year round. Early in the morning the city moves faster and the light over the bay is clearer; Saturday afternoon is the busiest time on the roads.

Can this itinerary be done by public transport?

The open-top sightseeing bus runs two routes around the centre and Posillipo, hop on and off, for about €27 per person for 24 hours. With city transport you combine metro, funiculars and buses for Posillipo and Capodimonte, on tickets of a few euros, but there are many changes and the hill routes run infrequently. For one or two people with time to spare the sightseeing bus costs less, and we say so: you get on and off as you please. The tour is for those staying outside the city with half a day: no trains into Naples, and it goes up to Capodimonte, where the bus does not. From three people up, the difference per head shrinks a lot.

Where does the tour start?

From the address you give us, in Pompeii, on the Sorrento peninsula, on the coast, in Salerno or in Caserta. Not from Naples: the stops are in the city, and a tour never starts from the area of one of its stops. If you are already in Naples, cruise passengers included, you can book a car with driver by the hour and do the same loop.

Can we add the Capodimonte Museum or the Sansevero Chapel?

Yes, by adding time at the stops: in the tour calculator you choose how long to stay at Capodimonte or in the old town, and the price updates. Museum tickets are separate and bought on the spot or in advance; for the Sansevero Chapel it is worth booking, as entry is by timed slot.

Can I customize the itinerary?

Yes. All our tours can be customized according to your interests, needs and available time. Contact us before booking to create a tailor-made experience.

Are the tours suitable for guests with reduced mobility?

Many of our itineraries can be adapted to the needs of guests with reduced mobility. However, some attractions or historic centres may have accessibility limitations. Please contact us in advance for assistance choosing the most suitable tour.

Can I extend the tour during the day?

In most cases yes, subject to driver and vehicle availability. Any extra hours will be subject to an additional fee.

Are tips mandatory?

No, tips are not mandatory and are not included in the price. If you are satisfied with the service, a tip is always appreciated but entirely optional.
