Pickup is in the morning at the meeting point entered during booking. Your driver will take you towards Sannio and Gargano with discretion and respect for the spiritual character of the day. Small group of up to 8 people, so the pilgrimage can be lived quietly and authentically.
Pietrelcina — the village where the Saint was born
The journey begins in Pietrelcina, the small village in Sannio where Francesco Forgione — the future Padre Pio — was born in 1887. Time seems to have stopped here: the cobbled streets, the stone houses and the silent churches still convey the simple, sheltered atmosphere in which the Saint grew up.
The main stops include the house where he was born, the church of Sant'Anna where he was baptised, the church of Santa Maria degli Angeli where he received the signs of the stigmata, and the Castello quarter, almost unchanged since Padre Pio's day. A place of deep quiet, far from the rush of mass tourism.
San Giovanni Rotondo — the heart of the pilgrimage
The second stop is San Giovanni Rotondo, in Gargano, where Padre Pio lived for over half a century and where he rests today. It is one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in the world, welcoming millions of the faithful from every corner of the globe each year.
The complex of Santa Maria delle Grazie holds it all: the crypt with the Saint's body, the old convent church he loved so dearly, the great new church designed by Renzo Piano — a masterpiece of contemporary architecture — and the Capuchin friary. A stop of profound spiritual intensity, moving even for those who are not believers.
The return is expected in the evening.

2 km · Low physical effort — Little walking, but many hours in the car: Pietrelcina is ninety minutes from Naples and San Giovanni Rotondo another ninety from there. Pietrelcina’s old centre climbs on cobbles.
- When to go
All year. On 23 September, Padre Pio’s feast day, and in the weeks around Easter, San Giovanni Rotondo draws crowds that lengthen the queues at the crypt: choose a weekday for a quieter visit.
The same itinerary by public transport
Long-distance scheduled buses run from Naples to San Giovanni Rotondo, about three and a half to four hours, around €20-25 each way, with few daily departures. Pietrelcina is the gap: it lies in the Sannio, off the Gargano bus route, and reaching it needs a train plus local buses on sparse timetables.
When it genuinely wins
Anyone wanting only the San Giovanni Rotondo sanctuary can take the scheduled bus and save a good deal, provided they accept four hours out and an overnight stay: with the departures available, there and back in a day is borderline. The two places together, in one day, cannot be done by public transport — they are in different provinces and no service links them.
