The excavations of Pompeii

A UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most visited archaeological sites on earth, Pompeii is the Roman city stopped forever by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. Walking its paved streets is a breathtaking experience: the forum, the theatres, the baths, the bakeries, the frescoed houses and the famous plaster casts of the bodies of the Pompeians caught unawares bring the daily life of two thousand years ago back with rare intensity.

With over 44 hectares of excavations, the site is so vast that every visit reveals something new. A place that speaks for itself, with nothing to add.

Vesuvius National Park

After Pompeii you climb the slopes of the only active volcano on mainland Europe. A walk of roughly 30 minutes on an unpaved trail leads to the rim of the crater, where the view opens onto the Bay of Naples, Capri, the Sorrento Peninsula and — on the clearest days — as far as the Aeolian Islands.

Standing on the edge of the crater that destroyed Pompeii in 79 AD is a moment of rare clarity: history and nature meet at a single point. The perfect way to close the day.

Comfortable clothing and hiking shoes are recommended. Entrance tickets for Vesuvius must be purchased in advance.

How much walking

5 km · Moderate physical effort — At Pompeii you walk about 3 km on uneven, unshaded Roman paving. From the car park at 1,000 m to the crater rim it is 860 m of gravel with roughly 140 m of ascent — about half an hour of steady climbing.

When to go

April–May and September–October: Pompeii has no shade and in August the paving radiates heat, while in winter the crater closes in the early afternoon.

The same itinerary by public transport

Circumvesuviana from Naples to Pompei Scavi in about 40 minutes for €3.20, with the station at the Porta Marina entrance. For the crater you then take the local bus up to the car park at 1,000 m, about €10-12 return and forty minutes of hairpins, with sparse departures and the last one back in the early afternoon.

When it genuinely wins

Doable, and it is the combination that works best by public transport. There is one weak point and it matters: timing. You are tied to the bus up and above all to the one back, so time at Pompeii gets squeezed to avoid missing it. With a private car the order of the two stops is decided on the morning itself, weather on the crater included.

Can this itinerary be done by public transport?

Circumvesuviana from Naples to Pompei Scavi in about 40 minutes for €3.20, with the station at the Porta Marina entrance. Yes from about six or seven upwards: the path is wide with no exposed sections, but it climbs the whole way on volcanic gravel and there are no handrails. It cannot be done with a pushchair and is not suitable for anyone with walking difficulties.

What happens if Vesuvius closes because of bad weather?
