The journey

Pickup happens at the address you give us — hotel, B&B or apartment. In the historic-centre alleys where cars cannot enter, we agree the nearest loading point in advance, usually less than a hundred metres from your door.

The drive from Naples to Amalfi covers about 67 km and takes about 1 hour 45 minutes. The final stretch runs along the coast road carved into the cliff, a sequence of bends and tunnels with the sea straight below — spectacular to look at, demanding to drive. Your driver knows every curve and every passing point, so you can watch the view instead of the road.

The last few kilometres into Amalfi are the slow ones: narrow road, limited traffic zones and very few places where a car can legally stop. The driver takes you to the closest point your accommodation can actually be reached from and helps with the luggage — worth telling us the exact address when booking, because in these villages the difference between one corner and the next is a flight of steps.

We drop you at the pedestrian entrance to the old town, or in front of your hotel if it sits on the coast road. From there the Cathedral is a few flat minutes on foot.

Amalfi gives the whole coast its name and is the only village with a real square and a harbour: the Cathedral of Sant’Andrea and its great staircase dominate the centre, while behind it opens the Valle dei Mulini with its old paper mills. It is the hub for connections to Ravello and the eastern villages.

Getting there without a transfer

The real alternatives on this route, with the numbers to compare them.

The drive· A3 Napoli–Salerno · SS163 Amalfitana da Vietri

From a Naples address the first obstacle is the city-centre traffic zone and the second is choosing the way in: from Vietri it is twenty kilometres of coast road, from Sorrento fifty. The real driving time on this route is decided at nine in the morning, by looking at where the traffic has stopped.

Trenitalia fino a Salerno + traghetto

April–October only
16–24 €

2h 15–2h 50

In season this is the best public chain: half an hour by train, half an hour at sea. The Salerno pier is a kilometre past the station, on foot with your bags.

Trenitalia fino a Salerno + SITA Sud

9 €
per person
2h 45–3h 30

The year-round option. The SITA bus works down the SS163 stop by stop, and in August you stand for ninety minutes of hairpins.

In short

From May to September, with one bag, train plus ferry is a solution we recommend without reservation: it costs little and you arrive in central Amalfi by sea. The rest of the year the chain reduces to the bus, and three and a half hours of hairpins is a different proposition.

Public-operator prices, durations and frequencies are indicative and were checked in August 2026: they change with the season and with the official timetables. Durations are door to door, waits and changes included.
