The journey

Your driver waits at whichever exit you prefer, with a name sign, or at your hotel. Many visitors leave from Piazza Anfiteatro after starting at Porta Marina — just tell us when you book.

The journey from Pompeii to Rome covers about 235 km and takes about 2 hours 50 minutes, mostly on motorway and main roads. It is a comfortable, straightforward leg: you leave when you decide, with no changes and no waiting for connections.

Between Pompeii and Rome the car is yours for the whole leg: luggage stays on board, and if you want to stop for a photo where the view opens up, you just say so. There is no extra charge for a short stop along the way — it is the difference between a transfer and a shuttle.

We take you to your accommodation address where the zone allows it, otherwise to the nearest accessible point. For the return to Campania we allow for traffic on the Grande Raccordo Anulare, which at peak times makes the difference.

Rome is the first or the last leg of many trips to Campania. High-speed trains link the two city centres in just over an hour, but with luggage and a destination on the coast you add changes and connections: a private transfer does the whole thing in one go, door to door, including early mornings and late evenings when connections thin out.

Is a transfer or public transport better from Pompeii to Rome?

For a day trip from Rome, train plus Circumvesuviana is a solid solution and we recommend it. A transfer wins if you want to combine Pompeii with something else on the same day — Vesuvius, Herculaneum, lunch on the coast — because by train every extra stop means going back through Naples.

Rome to the excavations works as a day trip, and it is one of the most common in Italy. The question is not reaching Pompeii but which gate: from the Trenitalia station you enter at Piazza Anfiteatro, from the Circumvesuviana at Porta Marina, and the whole site lies between them.

Seventy minutes to Naples, then half an hour on the Circumvesuviana: as a day trip it works well. The return is the weak point — the last useful Frecciarossa must be booked before you leave, not at the end of the visit.
