Wine Tasting on the Amalfi Coast: The Wineries Not to Miss

A journey through the terraced vineyards clinging to the coast, discovering the native grape varieties of the area.

Less known than the coast's most famous tourist spots, the Amalfi Coast's winemaking tradition has roots in centuries of heroic viticulture, practised on terraces carved into the rock above the sea. A wine heritage that deserves to be discovered as much as the villages that preserve it.

The Terraced Vineyards of the Coast

Growing vines on the steep slopes of the Amalfi Coast requires almost entirely manual labour: the so-called "heroic vineyards" develop on terraces held up by dry-stone walls, often reachable only on foot. This viticulture, recognised by the FAO as a globally important agricultural heritage, produces wines of character, shaped by the sea breeze and volcanic soil.

Native Grape Varieties to Know

Among the white grape varieties, Falanghina, Biancolella and Fenile stand out, producing fresh, mineral wines perfect with fish. Among the reds, Piedirosso and Aglianico yield structured wines, capable of pairing with richer dishes. The Costa d'Amalfi DOC designation, with its Furore, Ravello and Tramonti subzones, is the main reference for identifying these wines.

Wineries Worth Visiting

The Tramonti area, often called the coast's "breadbasket" for its agricultural vocation, is home to some of the most interesting historic wineries, offering guided tours through the vineyards and on-site tastings. Furore, too, with its vineyards perched above the famous fjord, offers unforgettable wine experiences thanks to its unique scenery.

Typical Pairings

The coast's wines naturally pair with local cuisine: Falanghina with seafood scialatielli, Piedirosso with aubergine parmigiana, and there's always a glass to accompany the goat cheeses and cured meats typical of the inland mountain areas.

How to Organise Your Tour

Given the winding nature of the coastal roads and the need to taste in complete peace of mind, a wine and food tour on the Amalfi Coast is best organised with a private driver, allowing you to reach the wineries — often in panoramic, hard-to-reach locations — without worrying about the drive back.

A tour through the vineyards of the Amalfi Coast is a different, authentic way to discover this territory, away from the busiest routes but capable of delivering equally intense emotions.
